Cotton yarn, hair dye

Dedicated to my long distance best friend. The hours spent filet crocheting, nowhere near the hours we spend thinking of one another. The unevenness of the hair dye clinging to parts of the yarn, some areas more saturated than others. The smell of artificial grape from the hair dye mirroring the scent of our stained hands from countless hair dye sessions in high school.

About my grandmother Asunción, who i never met, about my connection to women in my family, about my yearning for maternal validation as a gender nonconforming individual, about my guilt in my passion, about reaching out for connection, about religion ?

Confronting my perception of safety, I've come to realize how naive and reckless I can be when I'm with my loved ones. I will always feel safe as long as I feel love. My mom bought me a pink frilly bed canopy when I was young. Resembling a baby mobile, the plushies are the plush version of the fun eclectic keychains from my dad's car that he hangs off the rearview mirror. These are visual cues that make me feel safe. The words "GET HOME SAFE" in bubble letters along the outside.

Learning to embrace their emotional sensitivity, Ash Nanoz’s work follows their childhood intuition. Heavily inspired by stuffed animals - squished, held, and holding. Mirroring the charm of stuffed animals, utilizing materials that invite interaction, such as organza, polyfil, beadwork, embroidery, to create work reflecting themes of vulnerability, surrender, embarrassment, and playfulness. All in hopes of bringing comfort, brushing a thumb over their younger self’s knuckles.
